After Your Surgery

Postoperative Instructions

DO NOT LIE DOWN FLAT: Keep your head and torso elevated above your heart for 24-48 hours post-surgery.

GET UP SLOWLY: Sit on the edge of the bed for 30 seconds before standing. Stand up slowly and move slowly for the first day following surgery. You may be dizzy or unsteady from medications.

DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS: We recommend water and beverages containing nutrients, such as juices, Gatorade, smoothies, protein drinks, etc.

DO NOT DRIVE OR OPERATE MACHINERY for 24 hours after receiving general anesthesia or sedation, or after taking prescription medication.

PAIN: You may take three (200 mg) ibuprofen or Motrin® every six hours as necessary for pain in addition to your Vicodin® or NORCO® as we have instructed. Do not take supplemental TYLENOL® with NORCO, only ibuprofen/Motrin. Pain medication should always be taken with food. DO NOT TAKE PAIN MEDICATION ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. To coat the stomach, eat soft foods such as a fruit smoothie, yogurt, scrambled eggs, pudding, applesauce, etc.

LOCAL ANESTHESIA: The surgical area may be numb for four to six hours from the local anesthesia injection.

SMOKING: Absolutely NO smoking for at least 48 hours. Smoking will severely delay healing.
